Contempt of court citations filed against those who did not report for jury duty

NEWKIRK — Area defense attorney Jarrod Stevenson filed contempt citations in Kay County District Court on Friday against five members of the recent jury pool who reportedly did not report for jury duty.

“Over the last few years we have had problems with jurors not showing up for jury duty to the extent that jury trials for in-custody defendants have been continued because not enough jurors showed up like as were ordered by the court,” said Stevenson.

“In the past there was no accountability for jurors just choosing to not report for jury duty. Hopefully that changes after these hearings.”

Citations have been filed against Susan Elaine Sims, who reportedly was summoned as a potential juror for a Feb. 10 jury trial but failed to report and or contact the Kay County Court Clerk’s office.

James Kaden Horne, who reportedly was summoned as a potential juror for a March 3 jury trial but failed to report and or contact the clerk’s office.

Tara Lynn Wilde, who reportedly was summoned as a potential juror for a Feb. 24 jury trial but failed to report and or contact the  clerk’s office.

Raiden Wayne Agee who reportedly was summoned as a potential juror for a Feb. 10 and Feb. 24  jury trial but failed to report for both and or contact the clerk’s office.

Michael Gorden Roy who reportedly was summoned as a potential juror for a Feb. 24 jury trial but failed to report and or contact the clerk’s office.

The citations request the court to charge the group with Civil Indirect Contempt of Court, appear for arraignment and be found guilty of the offense and be sentenced in accordance with the law by fine and or imprisonment as well as pay all necessary costs and other expenses associated with the proceeding.

The offense is punishable by a $500 fine and or community service.

Stevenson said that a hearing in the matter is scheduled for April 10 at 1 p.m. before Judge David Bandy.
