Warrant issued for man accused of raping a teen by the river

NEWKIRK — A warrant is issued for a Ponca City man accused of raping a 13-year-old in his vehicle by a river.

Barry Dewayne Young, 44, is charged in Kay County District Court  with first degree rape and child sexual abuse.

The Kay County Sheriff’s Department reports that on July 13, a deputy assisted Ponca City police in reference to a report of a 13-year-old female who claimed she was raped by Young near the Salt Fork River and Ranch Drive.

Authorities spoke to the alleged victim and her guardian. The teen claims that Young bought beer, came to her house, picked her up and drove her to the location, raped her and then asked if he could take photos of her. 

Authorities believe that he has fled the area to Texas.

Young’s criminal record dates back to 2009 when he was charged with DUI and transporting open container. In that case he appeared before Judge Phil Ross with his attorney Lee Turner and entered a guilty plea. He was sentenced to six weekends in the county jail.

In 2012, he as arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. In that case he appeared with his attorney Todd Burlie before Judge David Bandy and entered a no contest plea. He was sentenced to five years in prison with all but five weekends in the county jail suspended.

In 2014 he was arrested and charged with DUI aggravated and eluding police. In that case he appeared before Judge Ross with his attorney Todd Burlie and entered a guilty plea. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with all but 10 months suspended.

In 2020 he was charged with domestic abuse and in 2021 he charged with a DUI, fourth felony.

In those cases he appeared with his attorney Thomas Griesedieck before Judge Lee Turner and entered a no contest pleas. Sentencing was stayed pending the outcome of Drug Court.

On April 1, 2024, he was sentenced by Judge Turner to a 20 -year suspended prison sentence. Bond for Young is endorsed at $150,000.
