Severe weather strikes Kay County and surrounding area

NEWKIRK — Severe weather produced storm warnings including tornado warnings in and around Kay County Saturday night.

Tornado warnings were issued for south-central Kay County at 9:17 p.m. as a storm capable of a tornado moved through the Marland, Red Rock and Billings area. Golf ball size hail was reported in around the warned area including White Eagle.

The storm moved into Osage County and continued to strengthen and went on to produce tornados in the Claremore area.

Later in the evening, locations in Cowley County, including Arkansas City and Winfield were placed under a tornado warning for a strong storm that hugged the state line as it moved east. The northeastern part of Kay County including Chilocco and Hardy were placed under a tornado warning.

Kay County Emergency Management director, Daniel Hesson, deputies and Newkirk firefighters  conducted assessments along the Oklahoma-Kansas state line to the Osage County border for potential damages from the pop-up cell in Kansas.

Hesson said that most of the area is rural and that the only tree damage and road debris, were found. No residential structures were found damaged.
