Veteran Appreciation Day set for 10 a.m. Saturday

PONCA CITY —  The VFW Day of Service Veteran Appreciation Day is set to begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at the VFW Post 1201, 2821 E Prospect.

In honor of the 2024 National VFW Day of Service, VFW Post 1201 invites the community to join in honoring and celebrating local veterans including the return of Ponca City’s National Guard Unit known as the Wardogs.

The unit is returning from a deployment to Djbouti, Africa.

Veterans will also send off 12 National Guard recruits to basic training and dedicate a plaque to 2Lt.Tracy Young Young was born in Silverdale, Kan. in Cowley County and graduated from Ponca City High School in 1940.

According to Young was in the Reserve Officers Training Corps at Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater. After graduation he received a commission in 1943 as a Second Lieutenant from the Officer Candidate School in Fort Benning, Georgia. In February 1944 he sailed for overseas duty. He served with the 306th Infantry Regiment in the Philippines. On Dec. 11 1944, Young was killed as he led his platoon into sweeping enemy machine gun and rifle fire from camouflaged foxholes of Imperial Japanese forces. The Japanese were entrenched in bamboo thicket atop a steep ridge near Ormoc, Leyte, Philippines (Chronicles of Oklahoma, Volume 24, 1946. No. 3).

Young is buried in the Manilla American Cemetery in the Philippines and has been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart.

Those scheduled to attend include General Rita Aragon(Ret); Oklahoma MOPH President Master Chief Larry VanSchuyner; Col. Pete Peterson, Chairman of the Oklahoma Veterans Alliance; Sen. James Lankford, Rep. Ken Luttrell and Sen. Bill Coleman.

 A free lunch will be provided to Veterans and new VFW members will receive a complimentary membership.
