PONCA CITY — Ponca City police have identified Deron Deangelo Maxey, 36, as the victim of Saturday’s fatal shooting that occurred just before 9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of north Pine.

Officers responded to the apartment for a report of gunshots. They made entry and located a male suffering with a gun shot wound to the torso. The male was transported to Integris Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

After speaking to multiple witnesses, police believe the incident initially began as a robbery, and at some point, Maxey was shot.

On Sunday officers with the Ponca City Police Department, the Kay County Sheriff’s Office, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, began contacting multiple individuals, at multiple locations, including 721 north Oak in Ponca City, to attempt to locate two suspects.

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday, law enforcement located the pair at an address in the 4400 block of south Waverly, outside of the city limits in Kay County.

Mitchell Reed Deroin, 18, and a 16-year-old-male have both been arrested and charged with Felony Murder.

Kay County District Attorney Brian Hermanson said he will not comment on whether or not the 16-year-old will be charged as an adult.

Deroin is currently being held at the Ponca City Police Department and the Office of Juvenile Affairs has taken custody of the juvenile suspect.

This remains an active investigation.  Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the Ponca City Police Department.  In addition, anyone with information may call Crime Stoppers at 580.762.5100.  You may remain anonymous and you may be eligible for a reward.
