NEWKIRK — Veronica Nayapena Abbas, 40, Ponca City, entered no contest pleas to a felony count of first degree manslaughter and failure to yield from a yield sign, in Kay County District Court.

Abbas was arrested following a fatality accident that occurred on Feb. 17, 2023 in which Sebastian Kuhr was killed.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports that Abbas failed to yield at a stop sign and was believed to be driving under the influence. (see story)

Judge Lee Turner sentenced Abbas to 20 years in prison with all but 10 years suspended. She is ordered to compete drug and alcohol programs while incarcerated and complete mental health programs.

She is also ordered to serve 10 days in the county jail on the failure to yield charge.

In 2022, Abbas was charged with a misdemeanor count of actual physical control of a motor vehicle while under the influence.

She entered a no contest plea to that charge and was sentenced to one-year in the county jail with credit for time served. Abbas waived her 10 day wait for transport to DOC.
