Blackwell Flycatchers look to end losing streak
July 22, 2023 | SportsALPINE, TEXAS — The Blackwell Flycatchers went down to Texas and lost four games in a row to the Alpine Cowboys at Kokernot Field and then lost another in Santa Fe at Fort Marcy Field.
On July 17 the Cowboys topped the Flycatchers 18-11.
The Cowboys took a 4-1 lead in the first inning and never looked back. They added six runs in the second to increase the lead to 10-0.
Blackwell got back in the game in the fifth by scoring nine runs and taking a 11-10 lead.
The lead was brief as the Cowboys plated six runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh. Cowboy pitching shut the Flycatchers down, preserving an 18-11 victory.
Rookie Cowboy pitcher Aldo Buendia got the victory and rookie pitcher Bryson Spagnulo got the save.
Flycatcher pitcher Matty Rones suffered the loss.
The two teams played a double-header the following day with Alpine winning game one 9-5 and the second game 10-2
In the first game, Alpine jumped out in front with four runs in the first. They added another in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth.
Blackwell attempted a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring five runs. Alpine scored another run in the sixth and held Blackwell scoreless for the rest of the game.
During the game, veteran Franklyn Perez, hit his fifth home run of the season for the Flycatchers.
Rookie pitcher Cade Johnson suffered the loss.
Cowboy rookie pitcher Cameron Mulvhill got the win.
Game two also went in the Flycatcher’s loss column.
Rookie Ty Andrews and rookie Jeff Fripp scored the Flycatchers’ two runs in the 10-2 loss. Veteran Luke Poselovich suffered the loss and rookie Cowboy pitcher Brayde Hirai got the win.
Alpine completed the four game sweep with a 14-2 victory.
The Cowboys scored in every inning except the third and sixth.
Rookie Kurt Trotter and veteran Dominick Pisano scored the Flycatchers’ two runs.
Rones suffered the loss while Cowboy rookie pitcher Matthew Hess got the win.
The Flycatchers continued their losing ways in Santa Fe, New Mexico on Friday against Santa Fe Fuego at Fort Marcy Field.
Santa Fe jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning.
Rookie CJ Mervilus homered for Blackwell in the third inning to cut the lead to 5-1.
Santa Fe struck back with a run in the third, and two in the fourth.
Both teams added two runs in the eighth.
Blackwell went into the 9th trailing 10-3.
Rookie Cameron Phillips lead off the inning with his first home run of the season to make the score 10-4.
Trotter followed up with a single.
Santa Fe rookie pitcher Simon Kozamawa struck out Poselovic for the first out in the inning.
Mervilus walked and Pisano was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Trotter scored on a ground out by Andrews.
Rookie Jaylon Thornton’s fly out to center ended the comeback and Santa Fe recorded the 10-5 win.
The consecutive losses drops Blackwell’s record to 11-22 and Santa Fe is now 12-28 on the season.
The two teams square off again at 6 p.m. tonight in Santa Fe.
