Blackwell Flycatchers split two with Alpine Cowboys; Series continues Monday in Texas

BLACKWELL — The Blackwell Flycatchers opened up a six game series with the Alpine Cowboys Thursday at Morgan Field with a victory.

The Cowboys took a 2-1 lead in the first inning. Blackwell answered with four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth to take an 8-2 lead.

The Cowboys added four in the fifth to cut the lead to 8-6. After a scoreless sixth, Alpine added what would be their final run in the seventh. Blackwell added three runs in the eighth and held on for the 11-7 victory. Rookie Jack Skantze lead Blackwell with three hits and scored three runs.

Rookie Jeff Frippp hit his ninth homer on the season and scored three runs. Rookie pitcher Eli Davis picked up the win, going four innings and striking out seven. Rookie Conner White picked up the save.

Rookie pitcher, Shane Hykin, Detroit, Michigan, suffered the loss for the Cowboys.

Near the end of the game, law enforcement was called to help break up a scuffle between the two teams. Blackwell police requested assistance from Kay County deputies at 8:09 p.m. At 8:22 p.m. deputies reported that everyone was calmed down. The game ended three hours later.

After a day off, the two teams returned to the battle field on Saturday. This time the Cowboys pounded the Flycatchers 25-6.

The Cowboys took a 1-0 lead in the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Flycatcher All-Star, Joey Dice, tied the game with his eighth home run of the season. The Cowboys answered with five runs in the second, another in the third inning, six more in the fourth, and one run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The Cowboys continued to pound Blackwell pitching with nine runs in the eighth. Blackwell put together five runs in the eighth but that would be all as the Cowboys held on for the win. Rookie Danny Sullivan picked up the win for Alpine, while rookie Bryce Holmes suffered the loss for Blackwell after giving up seven hits, six runs, and two walks. He did strike out two.

Alpine is now in fourth place in the Mountain Division with a 24-16 record. Blackwell in in sixth place with a 11-17 record.

The two teams resume play Monday in Alpine, Texas.
