PONCA CITY — Ponca City firefighters hosted a 5th grade class field trip for Newkirk 5th graders last week at the Ponca City Fire Training facility located at Pioneer Technology Center.

Eddie Shultz, Ponca City Division Chief of Fire Training, said that PCFD Capt. Jason Schneeberger was approached by his wife Rachel, a 5th grade teacher at Newkirk Elementary, on ideas for a fun and educational class field trip.

“Jason, after seeking approval from PCFD chief Butch Herring and Gary Vap at PTC, set up an opportunity for all of the 5th graders to experience a day in the life of a firefighter,” said Shultz.

“They witnessed a rappelling demonstration, used tools to force entry into a building, went through a room with artificial smoke and sprayed water out of the third floor window. They were able to go through an ambulance simulator, to see what it is like working as an EMT and they were also assisted in using the “Jaws of Life” and removed doors and roofs of supplied cars in auto extrication. Air Evac also landed their helicopter and allowed the students a closer look into their workspace.”
