TONKAWA — Firefighters are on the scene of a large fire in downtown Tonkawa.

Tonkawa Police chief Nick Payne said that the marijuana grow facility located north of TS Fork is burning. Payne said that Blackwell and Tonkawa firefighters responded to the scene at 9:28 a.m.

Payne said that the immediate area including the residences near the facility are evacuated and that employees of downtown businesses have been told to shelter in place.

Payne said that many businesses have chosen too close. He said one Tonkawa Firefighter has been transported to an area hospital but he does not know any details.

“The west wind is blowing the smoke straight down Main,” said Payne. He encourages everyone to stay out of the area. Tonkawa police, Fort Oakland Police, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol troopers are helping detour traffic from the area.

Residents are asked to conserve water.
