Identity of suspect shot and killed by Ponca City police unknown; Two officers placed on leave

PONCA CITY — The identity of the subject shot and killed by Ponca City Police Monday evening has not been determined at this time.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reports that police responded to a report of a theft at Plaza Wine and Spirits Store at approximately 7:15 p.m.

The suspect, a white male, reportedly purchased one item and stole two others before leaving on foot and encountering police.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot and entered the neighborhoods of Joe, Mary and John Streets.

Investigators report that the suspect was seen in the middle of John Street with a gun. When officers reportedly told him to put the weapon down, he car jacked a Honda SUV near the intersection of John and Hartford from a female resident who was on her way home.

One round was fired reportedly by police at the suspect.

Police pursued the vehicle back to the area behind Ponca Plaza where he drove through the field and abandoned the vehicle near the woods behind Harbor Freight and fled on foot.

Police reportedly pursued the man into the woods where he reportedly turned around and appeared to have a gun and an officer shot him.

He was transported to Alliance Health and a short time later pronounced dead.

Investigators report that a weapon was recovered at the scene.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol Dive Team was called to search a pond in the area of the shooting.

The Medical Examiner transported the body to the thier office to determine his identity.

The investigation is ongoing. 

Officers involved in the shooting have not been interviewed by OSBI and can not be interviewed until at least 48 hours after the incident. Both have been placed on leave.

Upon completion of the OSBI investigation, agents will submit a report summarizing their investigation to the District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney will determine whether or not to file charges.
