OHP releases information on Highway 11 fatality accident; Ponca City man injured; Bartlesville man killed

HIGHWAY 11 — A Bartlesville man was killed and a Ponca City man injured in a two-vehicle accident that occurred today at 7:39 a.m. near the intersection of Oklahoma 11 and Waverly, four miles south and two miles west of Newkirk in Kay County.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol reports that an unidentified male from Bartlesville, age 55, was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry eastbound on Oklahoma 11 when he crossed over the solid double yellow center line into oncoming traffic. The Camry then collided head on with a 1998 Toyota Sienna van driven by Ponca City resident Denver Gearhart, 83.

The Camry departed the roadway to the right and came to rest while Gearhart’s vehicle departed the roadway to the right and rolled coming to rest on its top in a ditch.

The Bartlesville resident was pronounced dead from head trauma at the scene by Newkirk Fire Department. The body was transported by Grace Memorial Chapel Funeral Home in Ponca City.

Gearhart was freed from his vehicle by Newkirk Fire and later airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa where he is admitted in fair condition with arm and head injuries. The cause of the collision is under investigation.
