Ponca City man convicted of child abuse

NEWKIRK — Matthew Sherwin Overland, 34, Ponca City, entered no contests pleas in Kay County District Court to a felony charge of child abuse and a misdemeanor charge of disrupting a telephone call.

The charges were filed on Feb. 22 after he was arrested by Ponca City police after an officer responded to a report of a juvenile who had been punched in the face. (see story)

Overland was sentenced by Judge Lee Turner to 15 years in prison with all but 26 consecutive weekends suspended. He must also complete 80 hours of community service.
