Bidding open on concrete reconstruction projectJanuary 26, 2021 | Featured|Headlines
PONCA CITY — Jim Fairbanks, city engineer, explained the Concrete Pavement Reconstruction, Prospect Avenue – 14th Street to 350 Feet West, Monday at the city commission meeting.
“This project is one of those approved for the budget early on last year,” said Fairbanks. He explained that the project is for concrete pavement reconstruction of Prospect Avenue from Fourteenth Street to 350 feet west. The outside lanes, curbs and the newly constructed median are all in good condition and will not be included. Only the westbound inside lane, eastbound inside lane and eastbound left turn lane will be repaired.
“We are obviously going to impact a lot of traffic,” said Fairbanks. “We are over 20,000 vehicles a day in this area and that is a big concern on how we are going to attack this thing.”
Fairbanks said the city is going to do the project in two phases, the westbound repair areas first. As a result west bound traffic will be closed.
“Once that phase is complete, we will move to phase 2 portion,” he said. “All of the east bound traffic will be closed and the westbound traffic will be able to move freely.” Fairbanks said 20 days are allotted for Phase 1 and 25 days allotted for Phase 2.
During phase one, traffic will be detoured north on 14th Street to Knight Avenue, then west to 5th Street and then south back to Prospect Avenue. The northbound left turn lane on 14th Street will be closed to traffic during phase one.
The new pavement section will include an 8-inch dowel jointed HES (High Early Strength) concrete pavement over 8 inches of ODOT (Oklahoma Department of Transportation) Type A Aggregate base over a compacted base.
Advertisement for bidding will begin before the end of January with a bid opening scheduled for Feb. 25. Construction is set to begin in April. The project is funded through the City’s Street Sales Tax capital fund. To encourage the contractor to expedite the completion of the project a $2,000 per day bonus/penalty clause will be included in the contract.
