TONKAWA — Tonkawa fire units responded to a report of a house fire at 2:39 a.m.  in the 300 block of N. 7th Street Wednesday.

Upon arrival firefighters found the roof of the structure fully engulfed.

Power was shut off to the home and firefighters battled the blaze until 4:30 a.m. and stayed on scene until about 9:30 a.m.

“The fire consumed the attic space,” said Tonkawa fire chief Justin Kienzle. “The wind speeds were up so weather was a factor. The family and pets got out. No one was injured but the home is a total loss.”

Kienzle said an investigation determined the fire may have been caused by wiring and extension cords on the back porch. The Red Cross is assisting the family.
