Resident facing child abuse charge fails to appear

NEWKIRK — A failure to appear warrant is issued for Cari Ann Roberts, 35, Ponca City, by the Kay County District Court.

Roberts was charged on June 24 with a felony count of child abuse by injury or in the alternative : child endangerment permitting abuse.

Ponca City police report that she is accused of giving birth to a child who tested positive for marijuana. Ponca City police Sgt. Matt Biddinger reports that he made contact with Roberts and that she reportedly stated a doctor told her she could smoke marijuana and that she would not intentionally hurt her child. Roberts also said she has a medical marijuana card. 

Biddinger reportedly showed her the back of the card that states that women breastfeeding or pregnant should not smoke marijuana. Roberts told Biddinger she was not aware of that.

Kay County Detention Center records show she was booked in the jail on July 27 and later released on bond. Roberts failed to appear for an initial appearance in district court on Aug. 7.

According to Oklahoma District Court records, a warrant with bond endorsed at $5,000 is issued.
