NEWKIRK — Newkirk Fire Chief Adam Longcrier reports that the northbound lane of U.S. 77 is now open and one lane of southbound traffic is open as crews work to remove the wreckage of a one-vehicle accident that was reported at 6:10 p.m.
Longcrier said the accident occurred south of Stateline Road north of Chilocco.
“It was a SUV rollover crash with five patients from Tulsa,” said Longcrier. “One of the patients, a minor, was ejected and airlifted to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita in critical condition with abdominal, hip and head injuries. Another patient was transported via Newkirk ambulance to Alliance Health in Ponca City with leg and back injuries. The other three refused transport.”
Longcrier said it appears the the vehicle went off the roadway and rolled into a deep ditch.
“This could have been way worse,” he said. “This shows how important seatbelts are. We believe not everyone was wearing a seatbelt. People need to wear them as they do save lives.”
Longcrier said Arkansas City Fire and ambulance was called to assist because there were five patients.
Kay County deputies and OHP troopers also responded. OHP trooper Adam Beck is working the scene. More information from the OHP is believed to be released later.
