KAY COUNTY — Oklahoma Highway Patrol is reporting that a Winfield, Kan. resident was injured in a one-vehicle accident discovered Thursday at 8:07 a.m. on U.S. 77 just north of Coleman Road, north of Ponca City.
Troopers report a 2012 Ford Escape driven by Kallen Smail, 39, Winfield, was traveling southbound on U.S. 77 when he departed the roadway to the right, vaulted over the railroad tracks, went airborne for 90 feet before striking the ground and rolling for an unknown number of times. The vehicle came to rest on its wheels nearly 145 feet from the point of initial impact.
Troopers say Smail was transported to Alliance Health in Ponca City in stable condition with head and trunk injuries. His passenger Joen, Masaichy Luden, 47, Sioux City, Iowa, was not injured.
Troopers cite the cause of the collision as driving under the influence of alcohol.
