Power outage delays trial

October 24, 2019 | Courts

NEWKIRK — A power outage in Newkirk has forced the Kay County Courthouse to close and delay the final proceedings in the Joel Benjamin Kassen murder trial.

The City of Newkirk posted on their Facebook page at 9:24 a.m. that one electric circuit line is off and that the electric crew is driving the line to find the problem. The problem needs to be found before the Sub Station can be re-engaged. The sub-station did what it is suppose to do try three times to come back on before going off completely.

District Attorney Brian Hermanson said the trial will resume tomorrow. Attorneys are set to give closing arguments and give the case to the jury.

Kassen, 26, Ponca City, is facing a second degree murder charge and a felony charge of conspiracy in the death of 22-year-old Cody Grantham. (see story)
