NEWKIRK — Newkirk fire officials responded to First Council Casino today at 2:25 p.m. for a report of five people stuck in an elevator.
Fire chief Adam Longcrier said the elevator was stuck on the second floor.

“The door did not close all the way and the occupants were trapped for about 30 minutes before we were notified,” said Longcrier. “The entire system was down,” he said. “We went to the third level and accessed the emergency hatch. Two firefighters got on top and lowered a ladder into the elevator. We had the subjects climb the ladder to the third floor one at a time. The guys were coaching and cheering them up the ladder.”
Longcrier said it took about 30 minutes to get the five out.

This is the second time in a couple months that NFD has responded to the casino for an elevator rescue. “Last time the elevator was stuck between the second and third floor,” said Longcrier. “We rescued three people that time. Longcrier said both elevator mishaps have been at the water park.
