Shooting suspect awaits extradition to Kay County

NEWKIRK — Kyle Lamone Hawkins, 33, is in the Sedgwick County Jail awaiting extradition to Kay County where he is charged with a felony count of shooting with intent to kills.

Hawkins is accused of shooting at a vehicle on Interstate 35 near Braman on Aug. 28.
The alleged victims told a deputy that they merged onto the Interstate from Blackwell when they encountered a white Jeep. The two vehicles reportedly passed each other several times before Hawkins, identified as the driver of the Jeep, reportedly pulled up on the passenger side of the vehicle and fired a gun. Deputies report there was a hole in the metal of the door below the passenger window. Oklahoma authorities notified Kansas officials of the incident and the tag number of the Jeep.

A short time later the Kansas Highway Patrol reportedly engaged in a pursuit with the Jeep near Wichita. Hawkins was arrested for eluding police. A search of the vehicle reportedly turned up a stolen Glock 9mm and three magazines containing 42 nine-milli-meter rounds. On Aug. 30 Judge David Wilkie agreed to raise bond from $250,000 to $1 million.
